Serra received his B.S. in English literature from the University of California in 1961. Later he received B.A., M.A. and M.F.A. degrees from Yale University. His dynamic minimalist works have been exhibited extensively throughout the world. In 1986 a retrospective of Serra?s work was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It is not surprising to learn that he worked his way through school by working in steel mills. This job prepared him for the monumental steel sculptures for which he is renown today. Besides his huge steel sculptures, he also executed a form of sculpture where he splashed molten lead along the base of a wall. Called ?splatter sculpture,? these works by Serra directly relate to his drawings and etchings since both are more concerned with the process of making the work than anything else.
