Daum Escape

Daum Escape, the museum’s fall outreach program, offers a museum experience to elementary and secondary students. This educational program began in 2004 and exposes students to contemporary art and provides teachers with information to assist them in incorporating arts education into their curricula. Thousands of students and teachers have participated in Daum Escape.

During Daum Escape, busloads of students and teachers are welcomed by docents who take small groups on tours of the current exhibitions. Students receive art-related information and education pieces about the exhibitions and Sedalia.

In advance of this event, the museum hosts the Daum Escape Professional Development and Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) Practicum Day for classroom teachers. Teachers receive curriculum guides and hands-on activities to familiarize their students with the VTS process they will encounter at the museum.

VTS is an innovative, student-centered, and research-based teaching method that builds cognition through art, develops critical thinking skills, expands language literacy, and encourages students to look, think, and talk.
