Orange You Glad…

January 25 - May 25, 2025 Admission

We didn’t say banana? People use lighthearted jokes and humor to form emotional bonds with others and these moments of comradery make life more meaningful. Humor in itself is a creative endeavor that makes connections between seemingly contradictory ideas. By focusing on the power of these everyday moments, we give credence to the idea of the commonality of man. Within the diverse world of human experience, individual moments—that can be easily overlooked and taken for granted—create memories that shape our existence. In this exhibition, the chosen artworks were originally linked by a single element—the color orange. As we delved deeper into the process, new relationships appeared between the works that provided a deeper understanding of how seemingly different styles and media can unite into a singular focus.

From the bold strokes of Sol LeWitt and Robert Motherwell to the subdued hues of Jules Olitski we begin to see the diverse relationships of individual encounters. Focusing on the reactions that these works elicit ground this exhibit in the viewers engagement of each piece. We invite our viewers to experience the intense moments of Irving Kriesberg and Vera Klement, the fleeting moments of Don Worth and Suda House, the frenetic energy of Terry Winters and Karen Kunc, and the soulful stories of Tanya Hartman. Each of these works play with ambiguity. Our lived experiences and individual interpretations influence our understanding of the visual world. This exhibition encourages viewers to embrace and connect with the work in their own way.

This exhibition was curated through a collaboration between Daum staff members Marcie Teter and Vicki Weaver, and Dr. Meghan McClellan of the SFCC Art Department.
